چکیده

Machine-type communications (MTC) are a rapidly growing technology, which is expected to generate significant revenues to mobile network operators. In particular, smart grid is predicted to become one of the key MTC use cases that involves unattended meters autonomously reporting information to a grid infrastructure. With this research, we consider a typical smart metering MTC application scenario in the context of 3GPP LTE-advanced wireless cellular system featuring a large number of devices connecting to the network near-simultaneously. The resulting overload of the random access channel requires a novel evaluation methodology based on comprehensive analysis and simulations. In this paper, we target to complement a validated evaluation framework fully compatible with the 3GPP test cases with a thorough analysis of random access channel performance in overloaded MTC scenarios. We also look at the regular MTC operation, when the devices are sending their data after initial network entry has been performed. By including energy consumption into our methodology together with the conventional performance metrics, we aim at providing a complete and unified insight into MTC device operation, including its energy efficiency. Energy Efficient Machine-Type Communications over Cellular Networks A Battery Lifetime-Aware Cellular Network Design Framework

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the interconnection of uniquely identifiable smart devices which enables them to participate more actively in everyday life. Among large-scale applications, cheap and widely spread machine-tomachine (M2M) communications supported by cellular networks, also known as machine-type communications (MTC), will be one of the most important enablers for the success of...

Networks : Spectrum Sharing , Random Access and Connectivity

Machine type communications (or Machine-to-Machine / M2M) communications have emerged as an important paradigm in wireless communication networks. The current M2M standardization activities are presented and their implementation in 4G/LTE networks is described in detail. The chapter is divided in three parts that are related to the evolution of the Future M2M communication Networks. The first p...

Extension of the Coverage Region of Multiple Access Channels by Using a Relay

From practical and theoretical viewpoints, performance analysis of communication systems by using information-theoretic results is important. In this paper, based on our previous work on Multiple Access Channel (MAC) and Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC), we analyze the impact of a relay on the fundamental wireless communications concept, i.e., coverage region of MARC, as a basic model for u...

Context-Aware Dynamic Resource Allocation for Cellular M2M Communications

While the huge number of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices connects to the LTE system, the bursty random access attempts from them are potential to cause severe random access collisions and degrade the successful probability as well as delay of network connection establishment. To address this issue, current LTE spec has specified access class barring (ACB) and enhanced access barring (EAB), but...
